The number of overweight and obese Americans is increasing
so fast that it is being called a national epidemic. Medical statistics show that
over half of the adults in the United States are 'overweight', and that nearly
a quarter of the nation’s adult population are 'clinically obese'.
The 'size acceptance' movement is framed as a civil rights battle, a fight for the right to exist 'without guilt, without shame and without the humiliation meted out by a fat-fearing public, a thin-obsessed media, and a society that sees fit to condemn fat people'.
